Columbus Place developers request takeover of city street section
SUMMARY: Hull Properties, the owner of the former Leigh Mall in Columbus, now renamed Columbus Place, secured approval from the Columbus City Council to close a portion of Old Aberdeen Road, which lies between Highway 45 and the shopping center. This move permits Hull Properties to expand towards Highway 45, create new out parcels, and potentially develop a new entrance. Mayor Keith Gaskin highlighted the opportunity to attract new businesses, retail stores, and restaurants to the area. Previous expansion attempts by former mall owners were abandoned due to the city-owned street complicating access plans.

SUMMARY: Cristian Mitchel Mondragon Gonzales, 29, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder related to a 2018 homicide on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Following a fight at a party on September 23, 2018, Gonzales pursued the victim, convincing him to go for a ride. He then shot the victim multiple times after they exited the vehicle. The victim was found the next morning. Gonzales faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and is scheduled for sentencing on February 12, 2025. The case was investigated by the FBI, Natchez Trace Parkway police, and Ridgeland police.

SUMMARY: Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Greyson Huff in a crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Sunset Drive in Brandon, Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced safety improvements.
