Columbus annexation plans placed on hold
SUMMARY: During a recent executive session, Columbus City Council members voted 6-0 to pause the planned annexation of two areas along the city’s borders. This decision, influenced by discussions between ward 5 councilman Stephen Jones and county board president Trip Hairston, allows both sides to reassess the proposal before the next council election in June 2025. City Attorney Jeff Turnage noted that waiting for election outcomes could save money on legal costs, with the city having already spent about $50,000. The county has allocated funds to assist residents with legal issues related to annexation.

Jackson police work to crack down on copper thefts
SUMMARY: Copper wire theft is a growing issue in Jackson, Mississippi, with thieves targeting buildings, cell towers, and utility poles. Federal judge dismisses Retro Metro's lawsuit against Jackson
SUMMARY: A federal court has dismissed all remaining claims by Retro Metro against the City of Jackson regarding a lawsuit over a lease at Metrocenter Mall. The city vacated the space due to poor conditions, including mold and pests, and Retro Metro sought over $4.5 million for alleged breach of lease and discrimination claims. The court ruled that the city’s decision was motivated by the need to protect employees, rather than racial bias, as Retro Metro claimed. Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba emphasized the city’s focus on public safety over personal interests in the matter.
