Colder weather increases the risk of home fires
SUMMARY: As cold weather approaches, the risk of home fires increases significantly. The American Red Cross warns that about 74% of heating-related fires are caused by fixed and portable space heaters. To prevent fires, maintain a three-foot clear zone around heaters and avoid using extension cords. It’s essential to have working smoke alarms, which can alert occupants early in case of smoke. Families should have a fire escape plan and practice it, including two exit routes from each room. Local fire departments offer free installation of smoke alarms for those in need. Stay safe this winter season.

Alternate routes include Highway 51 and Highway 11. The Danziger Bridge, Senator Ted Hickey Bridge, and Clayboard Avenue Bridge are open. Slow traffic continues on the Crescent City Connection, which is largely closed. Reports indicate ongoing repairs on several bridges and highways.
