Cold Weather Fire Concerns
SUMMARY: Severe drought conditions and a lack of rain are exacerbating the risk of wildfires in Mississippi. Firefighters are concerned that as temperatures drop, more people will use outdoor fireplaces, increasing the threat. The Mississippi State Forestry Commission has already dealt with a high number of new fires despite a small amount of rain. Conditions are expected to worsen as humidity drops and winds increase after a front moves through. In addition to wildfires, firefighters are also on guard for homeless individuals starting fires in vacant homes to stay warm. Residents are encouraged to check their smoke alarms and ensure space heaters have tip-over safety mechanisms. Chimney cleaning businesses are also busy ensuring chimneys are safe before use.
