Coastal leaders working to bring suicide prevention groups to schools
SUMMARY: Emma Benoit, a suicide survivor and advocate, is sparking change in Mississippi’s coastal schools by promoting mental health and suicide prevention. Her own experience with depression and a suicide attempt at 16 years old is driving leaders to adopt proactive measures. Inspired by Benoit’s message, community leaders, spurred by Paige Roberts of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, are collaborating to introduce strategies and form groups to support teenagers. Plans include partnering with Hope Squad, aiming to create welcoming environments in schools. Benoit emphasizes the importance of openness and consistent gratitude to combat emotional struggles. The initiative aims to establish Hope Squads across Jackson County schools by 2024.
