SUMMARY: When the wind picks up, kites often soar above the beach, controlled by kiteboarders like Gulfport High School student Braden Groves and 72-year-old Sunny Ellis. These thrill-seekers ride the waves using wind power, finding it exhilarating and ageless. Tommy Whitman, a pioneer in windsurfing and kiteboarding, runs Gulfport Board Sports, offering lessons in the shallow, calm waters of the Mississippi Coast, ideal for learning. Kiteboarding is more about technique than strength, and new trends like wing foiling, where a hydrofoil lifts the board from the water, are also gaining popularity. Whitman encourages everyone to stay active and embrace this exciting pastime. For lessons, visit Whitman’s website via WLOX.com.
