Originally, the vote was for an ordinance to place a memorial sign on Valley Street, but council members disagreed on how to honor Burns. However, they agreed that something should be done for the student. Burns’ parents stated that he was trying to break up a fight when he was shot. Other ideas to honor him included “Jaylen Burns Day” and building a memorial garden on campus.

Jackson Democratic mayoral primary heads to runoff
