Chronic absenteeism going up at Mississippi schools

SUMMARY: Chronic absenteeism in Mississippi schools has significantly increased, as reported by Auditor Shad White. In 2019, the chronic absentee rate was 14%, but it surged to 24.7% by 2023—a 76.4% rise. Auditor White highlighted that absenteeism costs taxpayers money and increases the likelihood of dropping out of school. This, in turn, can to higher chances of arrest and reliance on social services. Analysts estimate that the 2023 cohort of chronically absent students could cost Mississippi $550 million over time due to their increased dropout rates.
