Children's mental health
SUMMARY: Children‘s mental health is at an urgent state, with rates of ADHD, anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts on the rise. Factors such as genetics, physical health, poverty, and adverse childhood events contribute to mental health struggles. The increase in social media usage among kids has also been linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression. Parents are encouraged to have open conversations about mental health, look out for signs of mental health struggles in their children, and prioritize their own mental health as well. Early childhood is critical in building a strong mental health foundation for children. It is important to seek help from primary doctors and mental health professionals when needed.
A pediatric doctor and a licensed professional counselor have seen the state of children’s mental health reach a crisis point for more than a decade.

Heidelberg VFD receives $10,000 grant
SUMMARY: The Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department is expanding its fleet with a $10,000 grant from State Farm’s Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, just in time for National Fire Prevention Week. The funding will help the department purchase equipment for a new pumper truck, which they ordered in January 2023 for $320,000. Chief Prince Henley notes that while the truck will arrive soon, it won’t be fully equipped, requiring transfers from older trucks. Many of their vehicles exceed the typical 15-year lifespan, leading to costly repairs. The department has already received over 254 calls this year, emphasizing the need for support in small towns.
