Chickasaw County School District unveils new electric buses
SUMMARY: The Chickasaw County School District in Mississippi has recently acquired eleven new electric school buses through an EPA grant, with no upfront costs to taxpayers. These buses are cost-effective as each bus can travel 138 miles on one charge and have minimal maintenance. The district expects to save money on fuel and oil for the electric buses, which will be put back into the school district for other needs. The district plans to roll out the new electric buses to replace old buses that are 20 to 30 years old, with the first two to be introduced soon. This initiative comes at an opportune time as the district’s bus fleet is getting old.

Closing arguments begin in Carly Gregg trial
SUMMARY: Closing arguments began on September 20 in the trial of Carly Gregg, a Rankin County teen accused of killing her mother, Ashley Smylie, in March 2024. Prosecutors presented expert witnesses highlighting inconsistencies in her statements, particularly regarding hallucinations prior to the shooting. The defense rested its case earlier, and Gregg faces serious charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, with a possible life sentence if convicted. The court denied her motion to transfer the case to Youth Court due to her admission of marijuana use prior to the incident. Gregg, held on a $1 million bond, pled not guilty.
