SUMMARY: The Chandeleur Islands are rapidly eroding and could be completely submerged within two decades due to frequent storms. Approximately 60% of the islands have already transformed into submerged shoals. Restoration experts, including Mike Miner, are urgently seeking $290 million in funding to execute a plan that involves dredging and relocating 9 million cubic yards of sand to the islands. This effort aims to extend the islands’ lifespan by mimicking natural processes. The Chandeleur Islands are crucial for the ecosystem, providing habitat for endangered species like the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, diverse seagrasses, and colonial nesting seabirds.

The Louisiana island chain is in danger of being totally submerged in 20 years if their efforts are not successful, one of the experts told WLOX News.
