SUMMARY: CenterPoint Energy has released its post-Hurricane Beta report, addressing criticisms of its response to the storm. The 85-page report contains more than 70 recommendations aimed at improving operations for future disasters. While the company has implemented 18 and is working on 33 additional recommendations, issues persist in neighborhoods, highlighted by visible damage like downed poles. The report revealed significant failures in wood poles compared to composite ones, prompting a shift towards composite materials. Additionally, CenterPoint aims to enhance communication and call center capacity during emergencies. An independent group, PA Consulting, contributed 26 recommendations for further improvement.

SUMMARY: Members of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight are requesting a briefing from Texas’ maternal mortality committee about its decision to skip reviewing pregnancy-related deaths from 2022 and 2023, following the state’s abortion ban. The committee chose to focus on deaths in 2024 instead. Critics, including Rep. Jasmine Crockett, argue that this decision ignores deaths during a critical period and undermines efforts to reduce maternal mortality. They also express concerns that the state’s abortion restrictions are contributing to rising maternal deaths. The Texas maternal mortality committee has been criticized for its handling of this data amid increasing concerns.
