Mississippi State researchers granted $630,000 to tackle ham mites
SUMMARY: The federal government has awarded $630,000 to researchers at Mississippi State’s Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station to improve food quality and safety in specialty dry-cured ham by combating the ham mite, Tryophagus putrescentiae. Led by Wes Schilling, the research team is testing three control methods: a biodegradable cellulose film made from food-safe nanoparticles, various fumigants, and UV-C traps. A cost-benefit analysis of each treatment will be conducted. Collaborating with the team are experts from Kansas State University and local ham producers. Managing mite infestations is essential for the profitability of small, family-owned businesses in the ham industry.

DeSoto County planning to contest Senate’s redistricting plan
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Senate approved a new legislative district map to comply with a federal order aimed at enhancing Black voting power, sparking legal concerns from DeSoto County, which plans to contest the redistricting. The county’s Board of Supervisors has hired legal counsel, citing potential adverse impacts on citizens. The proposed map would merge current districts, resulting in special elections in November for affected areas, including Districts 1 and 11, where two senators would face off. The Senate also redrew other districts under a similar federal directive, leading to a total of 15 special elections across both chambers this fall.
