Gov. Kehoe signs SLMPD state takeover bill
SUMMARY: The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has been placed under the control of a state board after Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed HB 495, despite objections from city officials, including Mayor Tishaura Jones. The new six-member board, which includes five governor-appointed citizens and the mayor, replaces local control established in 2012. Mayor Jones criticized the move as disrespectful to local voters and an unjustified state takeover. However, the St. Louis Police Officers Association and the Ethical Society of Police supported the change. Police Chief Robert Tracy emphasized the department’s commitment to public safety under the new oversight.
