Case of Meningococcal Disease confirmed at Houston ISD’s Bonham Elementary School
SUMMARY: A case of meningococcal disease has been confirmed at HISD’s Botom Elementary School in southwest Houston. District officials have notified parents and are in communication with the Houston Health Department. Students and staff who may have come into contact with the affected individual have been informed. Meningococcal disease can manifest as meningitis or bloodstream infections, with symptoms including fever, headache, stiff neck, and nausea. The CDC highlights that while the bacteria isn’t highly contagious, it can spread through respiratory secretions. Vaccination is recommended as a preventative measure. Further updates from the district are expected.
The district said the school sent notifications to families and information to staff and students who may have been in close contact with the confirmed case.

New owner finds human remains at fire-damaged home in northeast Harris County
SUMMARY: Human remains were discovered inside a burned home on Village Grove Drive in Harris County. The remains were found by the new owner, who was cleaning the house to flip it. The home had been the subject of an arson investigation in August, and it’s believed the remains have been there since then, buried under debris near the entrance. The tenant, who was facing eviction, was last seen before the fire, and detectives are now trying to locate him. The cause of death and identity of the remains are still under investigation by authorities.
The house had been part of an arson investigation earlier this year. The bones were found in the entryway of the home after new owners were cleaning the damage.

Texas man gets life for sixth DWI; prosecutors say punishment fits the crime | FOX 7 Austin
SUMMARY: Joseph Heron, a 71-year-old man from Kamal County, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to his sixth DWI. His latest offense occurred in 2022 when he crashed into a dumpster while having a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit. Prosecutors highlighted Heron’s extensive history of DWIs across multiple counties, expressing concern for community safety. Despite previous treatment attempts, he continued to offend, prompting the severe sentence. Authorities emphasized the dangers of drunk driving, encouraging people to use rideshare services instead of driving under the influence. Heron will be eligible for parole at age 101.

Habitat for Humanity helps build 23 new homes for San Antonio families
SUMMARY: In San Antonio, 23 families celebrated the dedication of their new homes built by Habitat for Humanity, supported by hundreds of volunteers.
