New legislation pushes Mississippi runoff elections back one week
SUMMARY: New Mississippi legislation, effective January 1, 2025, will extend the runoff election period from three to four weeks post-Election Day. The bill, SB 2144, passed with overwhelming support (118-1 in the House and 50-1 in the Senate), allowing more preparation time for election officials and voters. Senator Jeremy England, chairman of the Elections Committee, stated this extension will enable better-informed voter decisions through candidate debates. Additionally, a ban on ranked-choice voting will take effect on July 1. Despite concerns about potential impacts on voter turnout and campaign costs, England considers these changes beneficial for a cleaner election process.

Mississippi Hospital Association names Roberson as new president and CEO
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Hospital Association (MHA) has named Richard Roberson as its new president and CEO. Roberson previously served as MHA's vice president of policy and state advocacy (2015-23) and was recently CEO of TrueCare. He replaces Tim Moore, who was dismissed following the loss of eight hospital memberships due to a controversial $250,000 donation to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Brandon Presley. Moore asserted the donation was to support Medicaid expansion, which Presley endorsed. Medicaid expansion remains a crucial issue for MHA, affecting hospital financials and patient care, though lawmakers have yet to reach an agreement on the matter.
