Camel teaches history at Vicksburg National Park
SUMMARY: If traveling across Mississippi this weekend, expect increased police presence and checkpoints. A popular attraction visited the National Park in Vicksburg: Douglas Baum and his family‘s camels, sharing the story of ‘Old Douglas,’ the only camel to die in the Civil War. July 4th marked the siege of Vicksburg’s end, where ‘Old Douglas’ served the 43rd Mississippi Infantry by carrying their regimental band. The reenactment aims to engage young people in history. Portraying ‘Old Douglas’ are 12-year-old Jadid and 15-month-old Saubr, appearing at the Vicksburg National Military Park on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.

State program provides Uber rides for appointments
SUMMARY: The Mississippi State Department of Health has launched a free transportation program to assist patients in reaching County Health departments and pharmacies for medical appointments or prescriptions. Partnering with Uber, the initiative allows adults over 18 to schedule rides at least 30 minutes prior to their appointments, accommodating up to four passengers. Since its inception, 892 rides have been scheduled, with significant usage among university students. However, the program needs more drivers, particularly in rural areas, to expand its reach. Patients can arrange rides in-person or by calling the local Health Department at 601-261-050.

Hurricane hunters order new planes
SUMMARY: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is set to replace its aging WP-3 Orion hurricane hunter aircraft with new C-130J aircraft. These modernized planes will feature advanced avionics, digital displays, and enhanced radar systems, allowing for a comprehensive three-dimensional view of tropical systems. The upgrades support NOAA’s ongoing research efforts in hurricane monitoring. Adjustments will be made for the structural design differences between the P-3s and C-130s, including finding new technology to replace certain radar systems. NOAA has ordered two C-130Js, with an option for four more, aiming to improve hurricane operations and studies, particularly in the Pacific.
