BYOB: Dusty roads – SuperTalk Mississippi
SUMMARY: Trying to fund a startup business is difficult, especially when people think your idea is illegal. This was the case for Leslie, who wanted to start a brewery in Mississippi. She approached every bank on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but they all said no. Determined to make her dream a reality, Leslie made changes to her business plan based on the feedback she received and continued to pitch her idea. Finally, she discovered the decision-maker at Whitney Bank and crashed a party to pitch her idea to him. This led to funding for her brewery, and she credits this success to Dusty, the commercial lender who believed in her.

Gov. Tate Reeves vetoes legislation reforming CON laws, cites willingness to negotiate with lawmakers
SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves has vetoed House Bill 569, intended to reform Mississippi’s certificate of need (CON) laws, which require healthcare providers to obtain government approval for significant expenditures. The bill aimed to raise the expenditure thresholds and assess exemptions for small hospitals regarding dialysis centers. Reeves opposed it due to a late amendment by Senator Hob Bryan, which he argued violated the separation of powers and interfered with ongoing litigation involving specific hospitals. While Reeves supports CON reform, he insists that any changes must be equally applied. He may address the issue in an upcoming special session focused on the state budget.

What Mississippians need to know as REAL ID deadline looms
SUMMARY: U.S. residents, including those in Mississippi, have until May 7 to obtain a REAL ID to fly commercially. REAL ID is a federally compliant state-issued ID established by the 2005 Real ID Act to enhance airport and federal building security. To get a REAL ID in Mississippi, individuals must visit a driver’s license service bureau with specific documents, including a Social Security card and proof of residency. Most Mississippi drivers issued licenses since 2018 already have REAL IDs. After May 7, REAL IDs can still be obtained but won’t be valid for air travel or federal access until issued.
