SUMMARY: The Storm Team forecast indicates two hurricanes in the central Atlantic and another system off the West African coast, though none pose a threat to the News 5 area. A Gulf system is expected to impact the Florida Peninsula, potentially developing into a tropical depression or storm by Monday. In local weather, temperatures are around 73°F in Downtown Mobile, with scattered cloud cover and mild conditions. A slight chance of brief showers exists along the coast today, with afternoon highs in the mid-80s. A frontal change by next week will bring drier, cooler weather and lower humidity.

After a wet day Friday, we will keep the cloud cover today but have limited rain chances this weekend. We start this morning with temperatures at around 70°, and we will warm into the mid-80’s by the afternoon. A few showers are possible mainly in our coastal spots, and we will keep mostly cloudy skies. Tonight, we will drop back to around 70° with scattered cover continuing. Sunday will bring more of the same besides more breaks in the clouds by the second half of the day. Once a cold front can dive south and through the area by Monday evening, we will see drier conditions for much of next week with highs in the low-80’s and lows dropping to around 60°. That front will keep any tropical activity to the south of the News 5 area. In the tropics, we are tracking Kirk and Leslie which are both hurricanes in the central Atlantic, but these do not pose a threat to our area. There is a new area off the west coast of Africa that has a low chance of formation, and it also does not pose a threat. The last area is in the Gulf of Mexico, and there is a high chance that a tropical system will form in the next week. A frontal boundary over northern portions of the Gulf will keep this on an easterly track towards the Florida peninsula.

SUMMARY: Law enforcement agencies nationwide, including Daphne, are facing significant staffing shortages, with the Daphne Police Department currently having six openings. Chief Brian Gosby highlighted that this situation strains officers, who spend around 90% of their time responding to calls rather than proactive policing. Contributing factors include a negative national perception of police and concerns among experienced officers about legal repercussions. A 2024 survey reveals over 70% of police agencies find recruiting new officers more challenging than five years ago, and the number of qualified applicants has also diminished, with departments unwilling to compromise standards to address the shortages.

The City of Daphne, like many other communities nationwide, is dealing with a shortage of police officers.
