Breaking down the cost of living: Lexington is 9% lower than US average
SUMMARY: June Lexington approved a record budget focused on public safety, health, and economic development, raising concerns among residents about its impact on their finances. The city‘s cost of living is 9% below the national average but 10% above the rest of Kentucky. Factors like farms and universities drive up wealth, leading to higher average incomes and rents. While Kentucky ranks low in median household income, residents from lower-income counties may find Lexington expensive. Conversely, those moving from larger cities might see it as affordable. With inflation cooling, costs may begin to decline, potentially easing expenses for residents.
Officials with the city say Lexington is a unique area with farms as well as universities, and both drive up wealth within the city, causing the average income and rent to go up.
