SUMMARY: Incumbent GOP Representative Nick Bain is on the verge of losing his position as he received 22 fewer votes than challenger Brad Mattox in Tuesday’s runoff elections. Mattox, a gun store owner, was endorsed by former Corinth alderman Chris Wilson and ran on a platform of protecting small businesses and cutting taxes. Bain’s vote to replace the old state flag was an issue among voters. After the counting of affidavit ballots, Mattox is expected to become the next representative in District 2, as there is no Democratic challenger for the November 7 general elections.

Women’s rights advocates celebrate as Gov. Reeves signs paid parental leave bill into law

SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 1063 into law, establishing the “Mississippi State Employees Paid Parental Leave Act.” Starting January 1, 2026, eligible state employees with at least one year of service can take six weeks of paid leave (100% salary) for newborn or newly adopted children. The bill passed with unanimous support after amendments reducing the leave from eight to six weeks. While praised as a step forward, advocacy groups like the Mississippi Black Women’s Roundtable urge further action to expand paid leave to low-wage and part-time workers. $12.86 million investment to double capacity of northeast Mississippi port
