SUMMARY: The Lauderdale County court system has been without Circuit Judge Gill Self since January, following his indictment for misusing court funds for personal expenses. Despite his suspension, he continues to receive a salary of approximately $7,300 bi-monthly, totaling over $131,000 since the indictment. Other judges, including retired and special appointees, have been handling his caseload. A new judgeship created in 2023 will be filled in January when District Judge Carol Medley, elected on November 5, assumes the position. Self, facing 18 criminal counts, has a status hearing scheduled for December, having pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Lauderdale County Court system has been down a circuit judge for most of this year following the late January indictment of Circuit Judge Gil Self.

SUMMARY: The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences has opened a new regional facility in Huntsville for testing evidence related to drug and DNA in violent crime cases across North Alabama. This upgraded laboratory aims to streamline the processing of cases, reducing the average DNA testing turnaround from 90 days. The previous facility, built in the 1960s, could only conduct one autopsy at a time, while the new morgue can handle three simultaneously. With rising crime rates and daily overdose deaths, the facility will enhance forensic services for law enforcement and support timely results for families and the justice system.
