Former educator and community member, Merrill was nominated by Councilman-at-large Patrick Gatel, who praised him as a pillar of the community. Merrill expressed humility and commitment to honoring Walker’s memory. As the election proceeds, Walker’s name will remain on the ballot, with the seat to be filled by write-in votes.

Because the vacancy came with less than six months left in the term, state law calls for the seat to be filled by appointment instead of a special election.
