City of Pascagoula appoints Rick Merrill to fill council seat following Councilman Johnny Walker’…
SUMMARY: Following the death of Ward 3 Councilman Johnny Walker, the Pascagoula City Council appointed Rick Merrill to fill the vacant seat. The council typically holds a special election for interim appointments, but with less than six months until elections, they appointed Merrill unanimously. Former educator and community member, Merrill was nominated by Councilman-at-large Patrick Gatel, who praised him as a pillar of the community. Merrill expressed humility and commitment to honoring Walker’s memory. As the election proceeds, Walker’s name will remain on the ballot, with the seat to be filled by write-in votes.

Because the vacancy came with less than six months left in the term, state law calls for the seat to be filled by appointment instead of a special election.
