Turkey Creek, known as the Phoenix Naval Store, was a significant industrial producer. The area was a historic district for Black settlers dating back to the 1860s. The Phoenix Naval Store operated as a supplier and processor until an explosion in 1943, killing 11 Black workers. The property went through restoration efforts and is now the location of Turkey Creek Headstart, one of the oldest education facilities in the area, with plans for further development by the National Park Service and local organizations.
