Biloxi VA introduces virtual reality therapy for veterans

SUMMARY: The Biloxi VA has partnered with SoldierStrong to create a new virtual reality (VR) therapy to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. This form of exposure therapy limits the body’s trauma response by immersing the individual in a simulated stressful environment, such as driving in Iraq. The goal is for patients to gradually develop a more controlled relationship to past traumatic experiences. Veterans will work with VR-trained psychologists to decide if this treatment is right for them. The VR environment can also promote communication between clinicians and veterans, encouraging sharing of deeper memories.
