Proposal: eliminate income tax, add 5% tax on gas, allow cities, counties to levy local sales tax
SUMMARY: House leaders released a comprehensive tax cut proposal aiming to abolish the state income tax, reduce grocery taxes, and boost local sales and roadwork funds. The plan would decrease the income tax from 4% to 3% this year, progressively eliminating it within a decade. It also reduces the 7% grocery sales tax to 2.5%, introduces a 1.5% local sales tax, and adds a 5% gasoline tax for transportation. The proposal faces scrutiny regarding its potential regressive impact on low-income earners. The bill will first be considered by the House Ways and Means Committee before potential Senate review and governor approval.
