Bills to outlaw ‘squatted’ vehicles in Mississippi pass both chambers
SUMMARY: The Mississippi House of Representatives voted in favor of banning “squatted” vehicles, which feature raised front bumpers, citing public safety concerns. The bill’s author, Rep. Fred Shanks, highlighted the danger after test-driving a modified truck and mentioned an incident where a child was killed by such a vehicle. Offenses would attract escalating fines and potentially a license suspension. Both state House and Senate have drafted bills against these vehicle modifications, with the aim to finalize a policy. If passed, Mississippi will join North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia in prohibiting squatted vehicles.

Charter schools in Mississippi are working: Let’s give more families the opportunity
SUMMARY: As a member of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Mississippi Charter Schools Association, I’ve observed the challenges faced by Mississippi students and the transformative role of charter schools. With only 10 charter schools currently in operation, the data shows significant improvements in student outcomes, especially in reading, math, and science proficiency. Expanding charter schools can provide more personalized learning opportunities and foster healthy competition within the education system. To better serve families and address educational disparities, I urge the Mississippi Legislature to pass House Bill 1432, enabling charter schools to expand and improve access to quality education statewide.
