Bill moving through legislature could close 3 Mississippi universities
SUMMARY: A bill in Mississippi’s legislature, Senate Bill 2726, is proposing the closure of three universities by June 2028. The State Institutions of Higher Learning would have to choose which schools to close by June 2025. An on-campus listening session would also be required as part of this process. The bill would allow some programs from the closed schools to be transferred to surviving universities in the state. Currently, the bill is in the universities and colleges committee, and it must pass out of committee before being considered by the entire Senate or House of Representatives.
