Bill allowing state to take over Jackson’s water system dies in House
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s Senate Bill 2628, designed to transfer control of Jackson’s water and sewer system from the city to a state-appointed authority, has failed to advance. The House did not bring the bill out of committee, halting its progress. Supported by Jackson’s interim third-party manager Ted Henifin, the legislation aimed to establish a nine-member board overseeing the utilities, appointed by the governor and lieutenant governor. The bill followed longstanding criticisms of the city’s management of utilities, which culminated in a severe water crisis. Efforts to have state oversight of these operations were unsuccessful in this legislative session.

Charter schools in Mississippi are working: Let’s give more families the opportunity
SUMMARY: As a member of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Mississippi Charter Schools Association, I’ve observed the challenges faced by Mississippi students and the transformative role of charter schools. With only 10 charter schools currently in operation, the data shows significant improvements in student outcomes, especially in reading, math, and science proficiency. Expanding charter schools can provide more personalized learning opportunities and foster healthy competition within the education system. To better serve families and address educational disparities, I urge the Mississippi Legislature to pass House Bill 1432, enabling charter schools to expand and improve access to quality education statewide.
