Biden uses State of the Union to contrast with Trump, sell voters on a second term
SUMMARY: In his State of the Union speech, President Joe Biden passionately argued for a second term, pointedly criticizing Donald Trump’s rhetoric of “resentment, revenge, and retribution” and its danger to freedom. Biden refrained from naming Trump directly but addressed voter concerns regarding his age and performance, with a determination to prove his competence for reelection. The 81-year-old president emphasized democracy’s defense, both domestically and globally, and condemned the January 6 insurrection. He also highlighted legislative achievements, including infrastructure and support for computer chip manufacturing, urging further aid for Ukraine, stricter migration rules, and lower drug prices. White House aides indicated Biden’s intent to use the platform to counteract Republican policies and underline electoral choices. Congress’s inefficacy and Republican walkouts during his speech underscored the tensions. Biden’s campaign included over 200 viewing parties to mobilize support for his reelection.
