Best-selling author Chanel Miller to share story of assault survival at 15th annual Julie Valenti…
SUMMARY: The Julie Valentine Center, celebrating its 51st year, serves individuals affected by sexual assault and child abuse in the Upstate. In the past year, they assisted 220 sexual assault victims in emergency rooms, with CEO Shawna Galloway Williams hoping increased reports reflect growing awareness rather than rising assaults. The center offers free and confidential services, relying heavily on community funding, including the upcoming annual luncheon featuring keynote speaker Chanel Miller. Miller’s memoir, “Know My Name,” speaks to survivor loneliness, victim-blaming, and the power of community support. The 15th Annual Luncheon will take place on Valentine’s Day at the Greenville Convention Center.

SC AG warns ICE resistance group against ‘unlawful’ behavior
SUMMARY: Attorney General Alan Wilson issued a warning to the South Carolina Democratic Socialists of America regarding their plans to form a “mass resistance” to ICE deportations and create a “Community ICE Raid Response Network.” He emphasized that while peaceful assembly is a constitutional right, any obstruction or interference with law enforcement will result in serious consequences. Citing past violent protests, including a recent incident in Greenville where a vehicle injured two during an anti-deportation demonstration, Wilson urged compliance with the law and stated that illegal activities would lead to prosecution to the fullest extent.

Gov. McMaster proposes $21.1M for school resource officers, staffing issues persist
SUMMARY: Gov. Henry McMaster proposes using $21.1 million from his 2026 budget to hire and train more School Resource Officers (SROs) for 177 schools across South Carolina. His initiative has already increased the number of schools with SROs from 406 in 2018 to 1,106 last year. However, staffing issues persist in Charleston County, where the Charleston Police Department struggles to recruit enough officers for all campuses. To address the shortage, the district has begun contracting armed School Security Officers (SSOs). SROs build relationships with students and enhance safety while providing comfort to parents and teachers.
