Ballot initiative proposal introduced in Mississippi Legislature

SUMMARY: The House of Representatives has passed a committee resolution to restore the ballot initiative process, but there was considerable debate about the restrictions placed on potential ballot issues. The resolution would not allow restoration of abortion rights to go on the ballot, changes to the state constitution, changes to local laws, changes to the PERS retirement system, or anything requiring a financial obligation from the state legislature. The bill would also allow lawmakers to change what voters have passed in any initiative election. The debate also focused on the lack of trust in Republican voters by some representatives. Signature requirements from eight percent of registered voters would be needed for a measure to pass under this ballot initiative bill.

Tupelo waiting on Target to make decision on new store
