Balloon release marks the end of an era at Wingfield High School
SUMMARY: Wingfield High School closed its doors after serving students since the 1960s, marking a bittersweet end for students, staff, and alumni. The closure was due to budget constraints and declining attendance, with current enrollment dropping from 1,200 in 2008 to just over 600. Students face uncertainty about their next steps, while alumni mourn the loss of their alma mater. The Jackson Public School District plans to close or consolidate 13 schools, selling the vacated properties. New Horizon Church is interested in buying Wingfield, intending to invest in its revitalization. The district will review proposals in June and make recommendations.
