Avoid feeding pets these harmful foods on Thanksgiving
SUMMARY: Veterinarian Leah Shannon advises pet owners to avoid feeding dogs common Thanksgiving foods such as turkey skin, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, and chocolate, as these can lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Animal hospitals often brace for emergency visits following holiday gatherings due to pets consuming harmful human food. Symptoms like refusal to eat for three consecutive meals, bloody diarrhea, or persistent vomiting warrant immediate veterinary attention. For mild cases, bland food may help. Additionally, certain plants can also be toxic to cats. Always consult resources like the ASPCA pet poison hotline for guidance.

Thanksgiving tips: Cooking, pets, leftovers
SUMMARY: As Thanksgiving approaches, safety is crucial for a hazard-free celebration. Maria Agular shares key tips starting with turkey frying: always fry outdoors, away from structures, using a level surface, and never leave the fryer unattended. After cooking, store leftovers within 2 hours in shallow containers, safe in the fridge for 3-4 days. While sharing food with pets is tempting, avoid giving them turkey bones, skin, stuffing, and sweets like chocolate. Safe options include plain potatoes, apple slices, and turkey meat without skin or bones. Taking precautions ensures a safe and enjoyable holiday for all, including furry family members.
