SUMMARY: On August 1, 2024, Mississippi will observe Gold Star Children’s Day to honor children of fallen service members, as proclaimed by Gov. Tate Reeves. This recognition comes after nearly 5,500 Mississippians died in military service, leaving around 10,000 Gold Star Children. A bipartisan resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Joe Manchin supports this initiative. The Gold Star symbol, popularized during World War I, represents families who lost loved ones in service. This day aims to honor the lasting legacy of these brave individuals and acknowledge the sacrifices made by their families.
