Auditor releases what he thinks should be prioritized during legislative session
SUMMARY: State Auditor Shad White has outlined key priorities for the 2024 legislative session. After combating the largest public fraud scheme in Mississippi’s history and reclaiming significant taxpayer money, White aims to introduce “The Whistleblower Reward Act”. This proposes financial rewards for citizens exposing corruption. His agenda includes strengthening the Open Meetings Act, offering free community college to JROTC high school graduates, and assembling a committee to revise state funding for university programs. White urges support for his agenda, deemed common sense and conservative, calling on the public to contact legislators and the Lt. Governor’s office.

Healthcare leaders gather at state capitol to advocate for Medicaid expansion
SUMMARY: Healthcare leaders and advocates in Mississippi gathered at the state capitol to urge lawmakers to expand Medicaid, a move supported by figures such as Kimberly Hughes from the American Cancer Society and Dr. Dan Jones, former vice chancellor at the University of Mississippi. They argue that Medicaid expansion could bring billions in federal dollars, support struggling hospitals, and provide healthcare to over 200,000 people. Despite opposition from Governor Reeves, who calls it “welfare expansion,” advocates remain hopeful that the conversation will continue. Legislators aim to navigate challenges, including Trump’s potential Medicaid overhaul, to find a solution that meets the state’s needs.

Bill to shut down Mississippi State Penitentiary dies for second year in a row
SUMMARY: For the second consecutive year, a bill aiming to close the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman has stalled in committee. Senate Bill 2047, introduced by Sen. Juan Barnett, proposed a four-year phasedown of Parchman’s operations, transferring inmates and staff while leasing most of the site. The bill suggested contracting with a nearby private prison for inmate housing. During discussions, some committee members expressed concerns over financial estimates. Barnett argued that closing Parchman, which has faced scrutiny for poor conditions, would save money compared to maintaining the facility. While past efforts showed promise, this year’s proposal faced similar challenges.
