Audit of Baton Rouge nonprofit group finds a few issues | Louisiana
SUMMARY: An audit of Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge, a nonprofit funded by taxpayer dollars, revealed a counterfeit check incident amounting to $15,175, which was quickly reimbursed by the bank. The auditors recommended strengthening internal controls and promptly reporting fraud to the authorities. Additionally, the organization lost its tax-exempt status due to late tax filings from 2019 to 2022, attributed to COVID-19 complications. In 2023, Family Road used $1.62 million, with 83% going to program services. The board pledged to improve tax return oversight and maintain effective operations as they continue to provide community support.

SUMMARY: In a recent update, the Louisiana Democratic Party is revitalizing its efforts ahead of the presidential election, inspired by the energy of Kamala Harris. After defeats in 2023, the party, led by chairman Randall Gain, is focusing on local engagement and youth involvement, with executive committees in all 64 parishes to better connect with community needs. While Louisiana’s electoral votes are likely to go to Donald Trump, Harris’s candidacy has spurred greater enthusiasm, particularly among women voters. Meanwhile, some students arrested during Pro-Palestine protests were acquitted of charges. Lastly, Monroe city officials reported updates on local projects.
