Attorney calls for Rankin County sheriff’s resignation after 6 plead guilty
SUMMARY: Six former Rankin County officers have pled guilty to state charges for torturing two Black men in a racist assault. The officers, known as the “Goon Squad,” assaulted Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker during a raid in January 2023. Jenkins was shot in the mouth during the encounter. Civil rights leaders have called this a historic measure of justice, but attorney Malik Shabazz, representing Jenkins and Parker, says the fight for justice and the removal of Sheriff Bryan Bailey must continue. Demonstrators have urged Bailey’s resignation at a recent county board meeting. The officers are expected to be sentenced in mid-November.
