Attack on Bourbon Street leaves at least 10 dead, 35 injured

Columbia Police investigate deadly hit-and-run, woman arrested in connection
SUMMARY: Tierra F. Johnson, 31, has been arrested for a deadly hit-and-run incident in Columbia, SC, where 71-year-old John Corbett was struck and killed on December 19, 2024. Johnson is charged with hit-and-run involving death and failing to provide information and aid. A judge set her bond at $75,000. The collision occurred around 6 p.m. in the 5400 block of Farrow Road, when Corbett, who was walking, was hit by a Ford pickup truck. SUMMARY: Today will be clear and windy, with gusts of 25 to 35 mph, leading to a hard freeze overnight. Residents are reminded to drip faucets to prevent freezing. Cold weather continues this weekend, with a reinforcing shot of cold air next week. A few flurries may occur along and north of I-40. Sunday will start sunny but cloud cover will increase, potentially bringing sleet and freezing rain, especially in western North Carolina. Rainfall is expected to average about half an inch, with temperatures dropping significantly. The coldest overnight lows will fall into the teens, making it feel even colder.

Palmetto State leaders react to former President Jimmy Carter’s death
SUMMARY: Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president, passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. Born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia, he went from peanut farmer to president, serving from 1977 to 1981. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts in resolving international conflicts. He had been in hospice care since February 2023. His wife, Rosalynn, passed away in November 2023. Flags are flown at half-mast in his honor.
