SUMMARY: The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is leading an archaeological excavation to remove and relocate thousands of bodies from a former cemetery at the old Mississippi asylum for the insane. The project, called the “Asylum Hill Project,” aims to respectfully exhume these remains and potentially identify them, allowing family members to relocate them for reburial. The old cemetery land will be used for hospital expansion after the project is complete. Charles Gibson, a representative from the Wayne County Genealogy Organization, is involved in the project and encourages local residents to get involved and learn more about it.
