Franklin Co. quorum court objects to planned prison
SUMMARY: Governor Sarah Sanders announced plans to build a prison in Franklin County, near Charleston, with approval from the Board of Corrections. While the governor promotes it as an economic boon and a solution to jail overcrowding, local residents, like Jarrett Key, are strongly opposed. Key, who moved to Charleston for its quiet environment, is concerned about light pollution, crime, and the impact on his family. The county also opposes the project, fearing long-term consequences for future generations. The prison will be a 3,000-bed facility, with $330 million allocated for its construction and an estimated 800 employees.
The Franklin County Quorum Court planned to vote on a resolution against a proposed prison.
