Arkansas commission clears deputy in controversial arrest case
SUMMARY: Former Johnson County Deputy Jason Cole was recommended for decertification by Sheriff Tom Hughes for his use of force during an arrest in January 2024. Despite this, the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commissioners deemed the force justified, allowing Cole to continue working part-time as a Tontitown police officer. Body camera footage revealed Cole striking a handcuffed individual following an altercation. Hughes expressed his disagreement with the commission’s decision, emphasizing his efforts to eliminate misconduct in the department, which has faced scrutiny under previous leadership. Cole’s actions were considered problematic but ultimately not criminal.
The Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training voted against decertifying former Johnson County Deputy Jason Cole for his use of force during a January 2024 arrest.

Frigid temperatures pose risks as kids return to school
SUMMARY: Doctors emphasize the dangers of freezing temperatures for children, who are especially vulnerable to conditions like frostbite that can develop rapidly. Key risk areas include fingers, toes, and ears, which require careful protection with appropriate clothing. Parents should ensure children are dressed in layers to retain warmth and monitor outdoor activities closely, especially during potentially hazardous conditions like icy sidewalks. Additionally, cold weather increases the prevalence of respiratory illnesses, with hand hygiene being crucial for prevention. It’s essential for parents to balance outdoor playtime with safety precautions to protect their children from cold-related injuries and illnesses.

House adopts contentious rules that make ousting speaker more difficult | National
SUMMARY: Lawmakers passed a Republican House rules package, 215-209, for the 119th Congress, which includes eliminating the Diversity and Inclusion office and allowing subpoenas related to the Biden family investigation. Notably, it becomes harder to oust the House speaker, requiring majority party motion and cosponsors. Republicans also made last-minute changes, including restored family-centric language and restricting rule suspensions. Democrats criticized the package as a distraction that neglects key issues, while Republicans argued it prioritizes border security, life issues, and voting integrity. Only one Democrat supported the bill, with five from each party abstaining from the vote.
