Trailblazing Mississippi lawmaker Robert Clark to lie in repose at state capitol
SUMMARY: Trailblazing lawmaker Robert Clark, who passed away at 96 from natural causes, will lie in repose at the Mississippi State Capitol on March 9, with visitation from noon to 4 p.m. Elected in 1967, he was the first Black lawmaker post-Civil Rights era and served 36 years in the Mississippi House, becoming House Speaker Pro Tempore in 1992. Clark also broke barriers as the first Black committee chairman in 1977 and worked to educate students and voters in his community. His legacy includes the Robert G. Clark, Jr. State Office Building, named in his honor. Public viewing takes place March 10.
