Applications for U.S. Senate Youth Program open until September 29
SUMMARY: U.S. Senators Roger and Cindy Hide-Smith are urging Mississippi high school juniors and seniors involved in student leadership to apply for the 2024 U.S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP). The program offers $10,000 in college scholarships to two delegates from Mississippi. Applicants must be elected or appointed student officers for the 2023-2024 academic year. The chosen delegates will attend the 62nd Annual Washington Week from March 2-9, 2024, where they will have the opportunity to meet national lawmakers and policymakers. The USSYP, established in 1962, aims to introduce student leaders to the federal government and public policy.

SUMMARY: Mississippi artists aged 21 and older have the chance to win $2,000 and be spotlighted at the state's largest art festival through the Blue Moon Art Project contest. Participants are required to submit a contemporary, museum-quality canvas (24″ x 36″) without beer bottles or text, inspired by the Blue Moon beer brand. Applications can be downloaded from the Peter Anderson Festival website and must be submitted with the artwork by October 4 at the Ocean Springs Chamber Main Street offices. The Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival will occur in downtown Ocean Springs on November 2-3.

SUMMARY: A manhunt in Harrison County concluded with the arrest of Bricen John Rivers, charged with one count of murder. Deputies responded to Wolf River Cemetery, where they found Rivers running into the woods. A deceased woman, 22-year-old Lauren Johansen of Gulfport, was found in the vehicle Rivers fled from. Johansen, reported missing July 2, attended school in Hattiesburg. Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search, ultimately locating Rivers and arresting him. He is held at Harrison County Adult Detention Facility on a $1 million bond.
