Appeals court steps in, temporarily delaying unelected court system in Jackson

SUMMARY: The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily halted the establishment of a newly created court system, the Capitol Complex Improvement District (CCID) court, in Jackson, until at least Friday, Jan. 5. The court was set to begin on Jan. 1, but the NAACP’s motion led to the court’s stay. The NAACP, represented by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, had challenged the legislation, arguing it undemocratically appointed judges, undermining residents’ rights and the Mississippi Constitution. Despite the Mississippi Supreme Court ruling for its constitutionality, critics and the NAACP continue to fight against what they see as state-driven discrimination and erosion of citizens’ democratic control.
