SUMMARY: The conviction of former Jackson police officer Anthony Fox for culpable-negligence manslaughter in the death of George Robinson was overturned by a state appeals court due to insufficient evidence and jury instruction errors. Fox had a 5-year sentence from an August 2022 conviction for the January 2019 incident when Robinson died following a violent arrest. The appeals court’s 5-4 decision could not be challenged unless the Mississippi Attorney General decides otherwise. The AG supported Fox’s acquittal, citing a need to back law enforcement. The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office expressed disappointment but respected the decision, considering future actions while keeping Robinson’s family in mind.

SUMMARY: The Capital Complex Improvement District (CCID) now has its own court, following years of legal challenges. Located at 201 South Jefferson Street, the court is overseen by the state, not Jackson officials. It was established after the NAACP dropped its lawsuit against House Bill 1020, which expanded Capitol Police’s jurisdiction. Critics argued it undermined Jackson’s local authority, while proponents believe the court will help reduce crime. Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Randolph appointed three local judges. The court will handle misdemeanor offenses, traffic citations, and initial felony appearances, with all fines directed to Jackson.
