Another cold morning before heavy rain, gusty winds
SUMMARY: A weather system is approaching, resulting mainly in rain for the southern region, while northern areas may experience snow. Freeze alerts are in effect for some locations, particularly in the north shore areas, with temperatures near freezing. Morning wind chills will also make it feel colder. Rain is expected to start this afternoon, with heavier downpours overnight and into the morning commute, bringing 1 to 3 inches of rain and possible flooding. Winds may gust up to 40 mph. After this front passes, temperatures will drop into the 20s and 30s by Saturday morning.
We start off with near freezing temperatures before warming to the 50s this afternoon. Expect heavy rain and gusty winds Friday morning as cooler air moves in.

New Orleans council talks safety inconsistencies post New Year’s Day terror attack
SUMMARY: The New Orleans City Council is investigating safety measures following a recent terrorist attack on Bourbon Street, aiming to prevent future incidents. Councilman Eugene Green emphasized the need for accountability. Concerns arose over the absence of barricades and the lack of an emergency activation center, as Homeland Security’s director was not present at the meeting. Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick plans to seek guidance from former New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton but faces pushback from council members regarding inclusivity in discussions. Frustration among residents highlighted past attacks, urging the council to ensure transparency and accountability moving forward. An investigation on bollards is set to begin.

Cold weather fire prevention precautions
SUMMARY: As cold weather brings increased fire hazards, West Monroe’s Fire Prevention Chief Charles Huggins shares safety tips. Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from combustibles and plug electric heaters directly into wall outlets. Avoid using cooking appliances for heating, as they lack proper safety features. Ensure all rooms have accessible exits and maintain working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. If alarms are over 10 years old, replace them. Local fire departments offer assistance with installation. Stay prepared to protect your loved ones from the dangers of winter fires.

This major development is part of a comprehensive strategy to attract manufacturing to the region. The plant will occupy several hundred acres of rezoned sugarcane fields and may qualify for extensive benefits under Louisiana’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program. The state’s incentives include tax breaks and a local rebate contingent on job creation. The project, which could exceed $6 billion in investment, represents one of the largest manufacturing investments in Louisiana’s history.
