SUMMARY: Today is an impact day due to a heat advisory lasting until 7 PM, with conditions expected to worsen tomorrow, prompting an alert for excessive heat. The National Hurricane Center forecasts a 70% chance of a tropical system forming over the Greater Antilles, although organization is currently low. The storm, currently over Haiti, is expected to move over Cuba and potentially strengthen as it enters the eastern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. While it may become organized, forecasts indicate it will likely stay away from the coast, influenced by high pressure pushing it eastward. If it develops into a named storm, it will be named Debbie.

Meteorologist Devon Lucie steps us through the tropical disturbance expected to track into the Gulf of Mexico and become a tropical cyclone, showing us it’s likeliest path and what impacts it could have on Southeast Louisiana

Brief outages in Lafayette as state utilities weather blizzard

Published

thecurrentla.com – Wesley Muller – 2025-01-22 09:08:00

SUMMARY: A historic blizzard in southern Louisiana brought up to 10 inches of snow, affecting public utilities. The Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) reported water pressure drops impacting 12,000 customers, leading to a boil water advisory for the northern part of the city. While the electric grid remained stable initially, outages were reported in Lafayette and Tangipahoa Parish, with some caused by vehicles crashing into utility poles. The storm is expected to worsen, with temperatures dropping below freezing and further power disruptions possible. Crews are ready to respond, though icy conditions could delay restoration efforts.

“While crews are ready to respond, icy roads and other winter hazards are expected to slow travel and restoration efforts,” Entergy said in a statement. “Additionally, cold-load pickup, the increased energy demand that occurs when power is restored to systems impacted by extreme cold, may delay restoration times.”
