Amory residents woke to smoke and smell
SUMMARY: Residents of Monroe County were awakened by smoke overnight, attributed to a controlled burn conducted by the Mississippi Forestry Commission. The burn, occurring between Highway 25 and Smithville Road, aims to restore forest areas damaged by an earlier tornado. While some homeowners reported strong smoke odors as early as 2 AM, the controlled burns are essential for clearing fuel and reducing wildfire risks. They also enhance conditions for timber replanting and help mitigate potential wildfire damages. Additional controlled burns are planned for the week, with further coverage on the impact from residents expected tonight.
Amory residents woke Tuesday morning to the smell and sight of smoke.

Mississippi lawmakers hold TANF hearing
SUMMARY: Mississippi Democratic lawmakers held a hearing to address the misuse of over $90 million in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, involving several individuals, including former NFL quarterback Brett Favre. With the rising cost of living and stagnant wages, demand for TANF assistance is increasing. Advocacy groups proposed reforms, including expanded program access, the elimination of discriminatory policies, and higher cash benefits, which are currently among the lowest in the nation. Governor Tate Reeves emphasized the importance of recovering misused funds and supporting those in need. Proposed changes won’t be considered until the 2025 legislative session.

JPD gets green light for license plate readers
SUMMARY: The Jackson Police Department has received approval to add two license plate readers to its patrol cars. These cameras will automatically capture license plates as officers drive by and check them against a database. If a vehicle’s plate is linked to a crime, it notifies the officer, assisting in crime-solving efforts. This technology is expected to enhance police patrols, enabling officers to detect stolen vehicles and respond accordingly during routine surveillance, such as at locations like Walmart. Overall, the implementation of these cameras aims to improve crime detection and prevention in the area.
