Amory residents took time to remember those lost on Memorial Day
SUMMARY: Residents in Tippa County are cleaning up after strong overnight storms, particularly in Blue Mountain. Winds over 60 MPH uprooted large trees and caused at least one home to sustain damage. Blue Mountain Christian University saw many old trees fall, including a nearly 100-year-old magnolia tree planted during Dr. BG Lowry’s presidency. Despite the damage, efforts are underway to salvage the tree, and overall campus damage was minimal. Cleanup is expected to take several days, and local linemen have restored most power outages. Meanwhile, in Amory, a Memorial Day ceremony honored 76 Monroe County residents who died in WWII.

Mississippi lawmakers discuss affordable housing for residents
SUMMARY: As the legislative session approaches, Mississippi’s House and Senate housing committees convened to discuss affordable housing. The Mississippi Center for Justice highlighted that one-third of homeowners and 53% of renters spend over 30% of their income on housing, identifying a need for 50,000 additional affordable homes. Senator John Horn emphasized challenges in finding starter and workforce housing, particularly for those on limited incomes. He expressed hopes that upcoming legislation in January would address these issues, along with minimum wage concerns, to ensure Mississippians receive a livable wage.
